Recently, I was turned on to a website called missingmoney.com, which is a website for locating refunds or other money due you that have somehow missed being refunded. It is a database of unclaimed property records for a number of state and provincial governments. A friend of mine looked herself up and found a sizable refund, about $800. I looked for anything for myself and my husband, but came up empty. I did a search on my (rather unique) maiden name, and found several records for family members. One family member just received a check today for $1170 from the State of Washington on behalf of a company that he once did business with. However, this company certainly knows where he lives because he has been in correspondence with them for years with no lapse that he knew of.
Anyway, it's worth checking out--you never know if you'll find something that you have long since forgotten about (an apartment deposit, etc.). It's like free money!
