Amazon Prime Shipping

As I mentioned a while back, my husband buys a ton of DVDs from amazon.com. In fact, he's pretty much quit going to Best Buy and Target for them, because Amazon can almost always match (or beat) the brick-and-mortar stores' prices. Just before Christmas, he was offered a free 30-day trial of Amazon's Prime Shipping service, which gives you free 2-day shipping on anything sold by Amazon, or anything sold by a reseller that is fulfilled by Amazon. After the 30-day trial period was over, he immediately signed up for it. It is $79 per year, and like I said, gives you free 2-day shipping as well as expedited shipping at a discounted price. What's really great is that he can share this membership with family members. In addition to our two separate amazon.com accounts, his mother also has an amazon.com account, and we can all use the Prime shipping.

I have to say this is really handy. A few weeks ago, when I noticed that Amazon had a great price on the taco seasoning my family loves, I didn't have to order enough to qualify for their standard Super Saver shipping. When I was looking for a particular seat for use on bleachers, I was made sure to pick a seller that was fulfilled by Amazon, and 2 days later I was sitting in comfort at my son's swim meet.

This Prime shipping membership will more than pay for itself over the course of the year. It makes it very easy to take advantage of the great prices you can find on practically anything at amazon.com.

Yum! Bison Tacos!

Just thought I would report on a meal I made with some of the ground bison that I got for such a deal last week. The other night, I made tacos using one pound of 94% lean ground beef and one pound of bison. I used 2 packets of Taco Bell taco seasoning mix. The unanimous verdict: DEELICIOUS!!! My family of 4 devoured this. We barely had any meat left over. You don't taste these and say "oh, this must be bison." The bison, to me at least, tastes like beef should taste. Very flavorful without overpowering the seasonings. Add taco shells, grated cheese, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, etc. Perfect-o!

On a side note, as I was surfing the web to find the image of the taco mix, I found that amazon.com has them for much cheaper than I can get in my grocery store. I bought them at Safeway last week on sale for 99 cents each. On amazon, I got a pack of 24 (which will last me about a year, considering we do tacos about once a month and use 2 packets each time) for $15.71, or $0.65 per packet. And, because our household has a subscription to Amazon Prime (which I will discuss in more detail in a future post, I got 2-day shipping for free).

A New Way to Order School Pictures

I love school pictures! They are a great way to document your child's growing-up years. I have always bought a large enough package so that I can share them with family and friends. Over the years, though, school pictures have become pricier and pricier. I was spending between $50 and $60 per kid to get all the pictures I wanted.

This year, I spent more than $60 on the picture package for my 8th grader. That's ridiculous. I also don't like the fact that I had to buy lots of sizes I didn't want in order to get enough of the sizes I did want. Expensive AND wasteful. However, the high school photographer offered the image on CD with a full copyright release for $20. I jumped at the chance, thinking that I could surely get prints made far cheaper. I was right. I spent $6.94 at winkflash.com to get all the sizes I wanted, from 8x10s down to wallets. I got only the sizes I needed. The prints were every bit as good as the ones from the middle school photographer that I paid THREE TIMES as much for (also counting the price of the CD).

Next year you can bet that I will be ordering the CD again for my then-to-be 9th grader. But, I'll also have to deal with senior pictures for my oldest. I'm already looking for frugal options.

They Really Do Have Everything on eBay!

The other day I made what had to be one of my oddest purchases on eBay, home of millions of deals on Antiques, Art, Cars, Cell ,Collectibles, Electronics, Toys & Hobbies, Video Games, and Everything Else (yes, it’s really a category). One category that I have mostly overlooked has been clothing. I bought a new Coldwater Creek skirt for about a third of retail a few years ago, but that was about it. Lately, however, I found myself in the market for another item of clothing: a bra. I hate buying bras. Hate it. It's so hard to find one that fits. They are darn expensive. In desperation, I finally broke down and went to Victoria's Secret the last time I needed one, endured all the up-selling by the salesgirl (no, I do NOT want one in chartreuse--or black--or nude) and paid what I thought was an outrageous amount--$45. But I do have to admit it fits. I decided I wanted another one, but was unwilling to go back to VS and unwilling to pay $45. So, I looked at the tag, found out the exact name and size I needed, went to eBay, typed it in the Search, and badda-bing! There it was. New, without tags. Starting bid was $18.99 with $4.50 shipping. I decided on a maximum bid of $20.50, but was able to get it at the last minute for the opening bid amount. After shipping, it was essentially half-price (no sales tax). And, it is exactly what I wanted. No pushy VS salesgirl, no trip to the mall.
I wouldn't have bought just any bra from eBay. As all us gals know, no two bra styles (even in the same band size and cup size) fit the same. But, for a bra that I knew was going to fit properly, it was a great deal.

Don't Bother With This One

A little while ago, I happened across a website called BidCactus, which bills itself as "new type of web-based auction experience that combines the thrill of real world entertainment with the efficiency and value of online shopping...born out of a desire to provide you, the online community, with a fresh approach to 'auction entertainment.'" The term "auction entertainment" should have been a red flag, but I was intrigued by what I was seeing on their home page. There were auctions being offered on brand new technology products like cameras and TVs, as well as gift cards to major retailers. People seemed to be getting these products for pennies on the dollar. Bidding starts at $.10 with no reserve for all items, and go up in 10-cent or 1-cent increments, depending on the item. Now, here's the catch, and what should have caused me to steer clear. Bids cost $0.75 each, and you buy them in bidpacks of 25, 50, 100, 250, or 500 bids. When you bid, the counter gets re-set up to a maximum of 30 seconds. An auction ends when there are no further bids and there is a winner.

It seemed reasonable enough to me, especially when I was seeing items like a digital camera go for 39 cents, or a Bass Pro Shops gift card go for 9 cents. So, I bought a 50-bid pack and set my sights on a Nintendo DS Lite that my son wanted to replace his original DS which was starting to fail. Let's just say I never even got close to winning one. Either I would hesitate too long in the waning seconds of the auction, waiting for "someone else" to bid it up again, or I would hit the Bid Now button, only to have it be too late or somehow not register. 50 bids later, all I had to show for it was a lot of time wasted watching auctions and trying to bid on them.

I kept seeing the same bidders winning item after item, by running the bids up ridiculously high (when you figured that each bid raised the item cost only 1 cent, but in actuality cost 76 cents). I honestly wonder if there are any real people winning these items.

My hubby and I came to the conclusion that this type of online auction is indeed "auction entertainment," or to put it another way, online gambling. Maybe they call the site BidCactus because you are more likely to get stung than win something.

Buying Used on Amazon.com

My hubby has a DVD habit. A huuuuuuge DVD habit. As in, "Run for your lives, the DVDs are about to take over the entire family room!" It makes me crazy every time another DVD finds its way into our home. I long ago admitted defeat; he uses his own personal spending money on them, so I really can't tell him to stop buying them.

At least he's a bargain shopper. He only buys new releases the first week of release when they are on sale. He compares prices between Target, Best Buy, and amazon.com (especially if he can get free Super Saver shipping). For older DVDs, he buys a lot of them via the amazon.com used marketplace. Prices range from one cent (seriously) to whatever the seller thinks the market can bear, plus a fixed $2.98 shipping fee. The shipping fee is per title, and sellers are not allowed to charge a combined shipping charge if you buy more than one item from the same seller. My hubby's rule for buying a used DVD this way is to not pay more than about $5 or $6, including shipping. He's gotten many titles for only a penny (and still, in my opinion, paid too much).

I have also started checking out the used marketplace to pick up some older books. The standard shipping price for books is $3.99, and, like DVDs, the prices for the books themselves start at 0.01 and go up, depending on condition, popularity, and availability.

So, while checking out a book or DVD from a library would be the best frugal option, if it is a movie or a book that you've just gotta have, buying used on amazon is definitely worth a try.

LA Police Gear

When my dad was here visiting this weekend, he introduced me to LA Police Gear, which was founded by Los Angeles-area police officers. They now serve the general public, military personnel, security professionals, and (of course) police officers. My dad, who is 6'5" and wears size 16 shoes, buys cargo pants, cargo shorts, and boots from them. He shops only in their Closeout section (must be where I get my frugalite roots) and has found some amazing deals, like a pair of Converse Foot Pursuit Desert Tactical Boots, regularly $100, which he nabbed for $8. Right now, they are selling for $39.99, but he said that their prices can change daily based on how much stock they have on hand, so he checks their site almost every day.

I'm going to keep an eye on this site to try to grab some cargo pants for my youngest, who absolutely refuses to wear jeans. Aside from clothing and shoes, you can also pick up flashlights, backpacks, and much more.

I Love eBay. Part 2: Buying

In my last post, I talked about selling on eBay. It's addicting!

Buying on eBay is the perfect way to get what you need at a decent price, if you play the game right. Depending on the item, I will either place my bid in a regular auction or choose Buy It Now.

My most recent eBay purchase was a very gently used TI-83Plus graphing calculator for my 8th grade son. I checked a few local stores (Fred Meyer, Office Depot) and it was running $99.99 ($109.49 after 9.5% sales tax). This is something that my son needs for his math class this year, and will use probably all of his high school career (and beyond). His brother who is taking calculus as a junior in high school still uses this same model of calculator. Still, why pay retail? I popped onto eBay and found one at a Buy It Now price of $65.00 with free shipping. The seller also tossed in 4 brand-new AAA batteries. Even without the batteries, that is a savings of 41%.

eBay is great for finding things that you can't find anywhere else, like my old Corelle Butterfly Gold dish pattern (which was being discontinued when I got married 22 years ago), discontinued Tupperware, etc. My boys use eBay to shop for old computer games, discontinued Magic The Gathering cards, etc.

Of course, the trick with buying on eBay (especially in a live auction) is to decide what your limit is and don't be tempted in the heat of the bidding war to go above that limit. And, of course, it goes without saying that it is best to only purchase from sellers with stellar feedback ratings.

Anyone have some great stories of eBay bargains? I'd love to hear about them.

    Recycling Books

I just signed up on a great website called Bookins. It is a website for trading used books and DVDs. It works really well--you post the books that you have for trade and each book is given a point value (most of the ones I have listed for trade are worth 6 points). You can also create a list of books that you are looking for.

When someone wants to get one of your books, they pay $4.49 to Bookins, and Bookins notifies you and sends you a postage label that you print and use to ship the book (I am assuming they are sending everything via media mail). The postage costs you nothing, and the point value of your book is added to your account.

When you want to get a book for yourself, you buy it with your accumulated points and pay $4.49 for shipping. Buyers and sellers never "meet" or communicate, it is all handled through Bookins.

I think this is a fun idea, and a great way for getting rid of old books and picking up new ones for very little cost. In the past I had sold books at used bookstores (i.e., Half-Price Books) but lately have been getting less and less for them. This looks like a better way.

Unbelievably, about 90 minutes after having posted all my books that I wanted to trade, I had takers for two of them. I got an email with a link that allowed me to print up a media mail postage label. I packaged the books in used padded envelopes (as they suggested) and they are ready to go out in the morning mail. I got 13 points for the transactions, which I can use to get more books.

    I'm On Etsy.com!

Etsy.com is the COOOOOLEST online marketplace for all things handmade. I have a friend who uses Etsy to sell her awesome handmade earrings (my favorites are the ones she makes out of Lego minifigs). I'm now a member, and as of today, I have my own etsy Store. Right now, I only have one item for sale, a 13-page PDF file of instructions on how to make a jean quilt out of old jeans, but in time, I hope to expand into other "upcycled" crafts and instruction booklets.

I hope you'll stop by and take a look!

    70% off at coldwatercreek.com

If you love Coldwater Creek as much as I do, you HAVE to go to their website between now and January 5. EVERYTHING is 70% off when you use code WXH6446.

I shopped online last night and got a skirt, cardigan, turtleneck, hooded poncho, lace-trim tee and embellished jeans for less than what the jeans would have cost if I had paid full price. I'm tempted to go get another pair of the same jeans (in the next smaller size, for when I lose a bit more weight) and a blouse or two.

    Coupon Codes for Online Shopping

In a previous post, I wrote about mycoupons.com, a website that lets you find coupon codes for hundreds of online shopping sites. I use it all the time when I am shopping online and have found codes for money off and free shipping. Just recently, I also heard about freeshipping.org, which is essentially the same sort of website, offering online codes for free shipping (as the name implies) and other savings as well. I haven't had a chance to fully compare the two sites, but I will be checking both sites for future online purchases to see if one site has an edge over the other.

    123 Inkets

In a follow-up to an earlier post about sources for inexpensive inkjet cartridges, I am happy to now be able to recommend 123 Inkjets. I ordered some refill cartridges for my notoriously particular HP Photosmart 3-in-1 and was very pleased, not only because I got them for about 45% off the price of new, genuine HP cartridges at Office Depot, but because they work just great in my machine. It recognizes them as genuine HP cartridges.

Give it a try. Their shipping was really fast, too!

Today Only: Try out Refundcents.com for Free

Thanks to a Frugal Friend, I was reminded that for today only you can check out www.refundcents.com for free (there is a small fee associated with subscribing--not exactly sure how much it is).

The website is www.refundcents.com. Both the username and the password is coupons.

I'll try to check it out tonight, but I'd love to hear from anyone else who does take a peek, as I might not get a chance--my 15-year-old had his wisdom teeth out today and things are a little nuts.

    ShoeBuy.com

Wow, I have a new favorite website for shopping for shoes: Shoebuy.com. I went out there looking for some Brooks cross-trainers for the gym. My feet have been giving me trouble lately, so I didn't want to just get a pair of cheapies. I have a pair of Brooks walking shoes that I love, so I thought I would give these cross-trainers a try. They were originally $93.50, but ShoeBuy had them on sale for $62.45. Then, because I found an online coupon code on mycoupons.com, I got 15% off. Then, because I registered with them, I got another 10% off. AND because I accessed the website through my credit card's online shopping site, I will get 9% back in rewards points.

Oh, and it just keeps getting better. I was not charged for sales tax OR for shipping. My total bill was $47.77, less than half the original retail price. If I need to return the shoes, return shipping is also free. I can't wait to get my shoes and see how they fit.

I put a link off to the left if you would like to join my referral network. You will get a coupon for $10 off your order, and if you register you can get another 10% off. Plus, if I get at least 3 people to sign up through me and place an order, I'll get a $100 ShoeBuy.com gift certificate.

    e.l.f Makeup--Here's What I Got

My e.l.f. makeup finally arrived. Even though I opted for the cheapest shipping option, I thought it took a little long to get here (I ordered it August 28). But, look at what all I got for my $16.45! I am really excited about the eye makeup remover pads. I must confess that I am a total slacker in taking eye makeup off because it is so time-consuming. The only other drawback to having ordered from them was that now I get at least one e-mail a day from them. I guess I could opt out, but what if I miss another great deal? After I give these new products a whirl, I bet I will be ordering again (if their prices stay low).

    e.l.f. Makeup for $1

I just got an e-mail from a friend who turned me on to a sale at http://www.eyeslipsface.com. Apparently, Nordstrom has bought the e.l.f. line and will be rebranding these products with their own label. As a result, they are selling off just about everything with the e.l.f. label for $1.00, plus standard shipping of $6.95. I don't know what their regular prices are, but I figure for eye makeup remover pads, eye liner, eye brushes, eyeshadow applicators, concealer, mascara, lip color, and lip balm, I got a pretty good deal. There is also a coupon code, CAROLINA, that gives you up to $7.50 off your order (if your order is under $15, you get 50% off; you get $7.50 off orders over $15.00).

I ordered a total of 17 items, applied my coupon code, and ended up paying $16.45 including shipping (no tax was applied).

If you need to add a few makeup basics to your kit, check it out (some items, like gift sets, and minerals, are slightly higher in price but still a good deal).

    Shout-Out for ShoeMall.com

I ordered these great Reef flip-flops using an amazon.com gift certificate, and they arrived yesterday. I had never bought anything other than books from amazon.com before, but I couldn't find anything I really wanted (though I did buy Twilight in paperback to see if I liked the premise before buying the whole series). Then I stumbled on these flip-flops. I have been looking for a pair of black ones all summer long. These were in my very hard-to-find size (11) and reasonably cheap considering they were name brand ($19.95--thought I found out today that is the regular price, so I am not feeling quite so smug). So, I ordered them. I didn't have to pay shipping (USPS Parcel Post ground) or sales tax (which saved me 9% right there).

I must say I am really impressed. Not only are the flip-flops extremely comfy (they even have arches in the soles--important for my old feet), but they came in very minimal packaging. Everything you see here: a gray shipping pouch, the shoes inside a clear bag, a receipt, and an ad for Proactiv. I was really appreciative that they were able to spare all the extra packaging. Not only does this save on shipping (and fuel for the Postal Service), but there's less for me to have to dispose of. The only way the packaging could have been any better is if there were recycling symbols on the bags, so that I could recycle them.

On the packing slip, I got a code for 15% off my next order at ShoeMall.com (obviously a partner of amazon.com). I'll definitely use it!

    Online Coupon Codes at mycoupons.com

We're home from the beach! With our staycation over, it's time to focus on preparations for our oldest son's Eagle Scout Court of Honor. Wow, I had no idea that this event could be such a huge deal! The receptionist at work said, "oh, yeah, they can be as elaborate as a wedding." Or not!

We are going to have a very nice Court of Honor to celebrate all his hard work. He had his Board of Review one week after he turned 15, which is definitely young for our troop. Most of our recent Eagles have been "deathbed Eagles," who turn in their paperwork as the clock ticks midnight before their 18th birthday. Very few of them have had a Court of Honor so I have been on my own in planning my son's.

I found some very classy invitations at VistaPrint (in their Military Announcements section), but they were a little more than I wanted to spend. So, I went out to mycoupons.com, typed VistaPrint in the search, and up popped a variety of different online codes. I used the code for 50% off invitations. I got 90 full-color 1/4-sheet invitations, 90 plain white envelopes, 140 matching return address labels for under $40, including shipping!

MyCoupons.com has online coupons for just about any online merchant you can think of. I routinely find codes for Avon, Coldwater Creek, JCPenney, etc. Before you make an online purchase, stop by MyCoupons.com and see what's available. You won't be sorry.
